Llama, I've never known that ibuprofen gives one a problem falling to sleep. If that were the case across the board I'd never have gotten a wink of it during my knee replacement recovery since I was on fantastic amounts of it 24/7 for weeks. It must only affect certain people. It has never affected me that way, thankfully.

Alva: Yep, woke up screaming to my DH to get some medicine. Plus you really shouldn't take Ibuprofen before bed due to the difficulty of falling asleep. Thank you!

I hope that you feel better soon, Llama. Back injuries are quite literally a pain to deal with!

Llama, well to I know the turning in bed in your sleep and calling out in pain. Well does my PARTNER know it. The nerve pain is what nerve are meant to do----shock. And yeah, the spasms that result after the nerve pain are daunting. As in "I cannot move".

Worst worst worst worst for me, getting up and down off the toilet. And we are talking the raised ones, the higher ones. Alas. You have the sympathy of every nerve in my body. Just want you to know that this, too, will pass.

Alva: Thank you! I was glad that I realized that I had injured my back/sciatica nerve myself (after a very active day and then the overreach/over stretch). I am sorry that you, too, have experienced back pain. I was grateful for the Toradol injection, as initially the Ibuprofen wasn't touching the pain. I don't look forward to bedtime as last night was HARD. I've already used my PCP's portal to schedule the f/u appt. I am a 76 year old woman, who always puts myself last. Tough to amend, but I had to.

well a whine and a not whine..LOL They finally approved my medicare!! Its been pending since 8/1.. a screw up on their end with my birth date so I had to take in my BC ( which I would not have known if I had not called them). BUT,, they said it will be "a few weeks" maybe until I get my letter and card. Which I need to finish processing my medicine card ( I do have the health insurance.) My poor broker is going nuts, and if I don't have a number by the end of the month I'll be self paying my meds until Dec. I did tell the person I spoke to today that I really need it sooner rather than later.. he said it could be sooner so I will keep checking! wish me luck! And my new crown is doing great.. so that is good news!

I guess my point is, you have to completely read the discharge summary and understand what you're looking at.

If Barbs daughter creates an account to look at her records at the hospital via the hospital portal she can look for herself on her computer to see exactly what the lab results say .

I read all my FIL lab results that way , as well as doctors notes etc when he has been at the hospital .

I’m not confident a live person would even answer a phone in the lab these days .

And it’s great that they told her she has a UTI, but is anyone calling in a script ? By now they have the sensitivity results of the urine C&S. Meaning they have cultured the specimen and tested to see what antibiotics it is sensitive to .

Hopefully they call in a script or send the lab results to her primary doctor who can call in a script . If her primary doctors office uses the same medical records system as the hospital , the primary doctor should be able to see the record on the computer . Where I live most doctors and hospitals uses EPIC .

Barb, how would she know if they did a culture or not? It goes to the lab. If a culture was ORDERED they would do it. Or if a test showed any abnormalities at all.
In the past when I had frequent UTIs they often didn't show in the UA. They only showed in the culture. She should call the lab and be certain. Results, if they come through the computer, expected in about three days. I always recommend a culture. Glad she got her results.

Barb, Hmmmmm…interesting, huh? How is she feeling?

I have never had a UTI so I personally have no clue as to how they feel.

My oldest daughter has them. It sounds like they are very uncomfortable.

My mom got them occasionally. Her brother had one that turned septic and nearly died.

He was a bit stubborn and insisted on staying in his house when he could no longer care for himself. My cousins finally convinced him to go to a nursing home after he dealt with sepsis.

This is another "anti-whine". My middle who was having symptoms that I thought consistent with a UTI went to the ER a few nights ago. The dipstick test came back negative and she told me she didn't have a UTI. But she sent me the discharge summary which said that they DID do a culture. I emailed her yesterday and asked if she'd heard. She INSISTED they hadn't done a culture.

Lo and behold, she texts me this am that she's gotten a message from the hospital --positive UTI culture.

I would not know this stuff if I hadn't been hanging out here since 2011! Thank you all.

Another old nurse here currently sitting with a heating pad on my back because the spare bed at my daughter’s is too soft . I’m pet sitting . All the bending over really low to put the leash on the dog to walk him isn’t helping . He’s one of those low to the ground long hot dogs with a small bladder 🙄.

Llama, Good luck! With my old nurse's back it takes little to put it out. Used to be I would tell myself "Well, here goes 2 weeks of pain" but now I am so used to it, the spasms following the nerve pain, that it is more like two days. There have been bad bouts where it took a walker to get me about for a few days, one that hit me in the yard and I had to scoot upstairs backward on my butt using my (fortunately) strong arms. Most back issues go by two weeks. Careful with the ibuprofen. I can't take it anymore as it really riles up the diverticulitis issues. So now I take nothing for pain as I find that tylenol does nothing for me.
Backs are about as individual as our own thumbprint, but for me it is the bend and reach that gets it every time (think bedmaking).
Looked for your update all yesterday, and was thinking of you. Be real careful while there is nerve pain. And once it goes to muscle spasm you can move around more. NO SITTING. Semi-fowlers or up or walking or laying.
GOOD LUCK.

Update: DH took me to Patient First today in the car because there was no way that I could manage to get in the F150. It's good that I was able to recognize how the injury had occurred. I got an injection of Toradol in the glute, which is supposed to provide 6 to 8 hours of relief (though the pain is still there). I also got 800 mg Ibuprofen and a step down of Methylprednisolone and of course was told to alternate ice and heat.
