Tonight is an easy-fix batch of goulash from the large batch I made the other day and froze. (I had extra, which I was going to save, but today's been kind of nutty, so we needed something fast.)

Been working on shifting stuff around in the house all day to make space to put all furniture and appliances in one room (now THAT'S going to be interesting) in preparation for the floor refinishing and wall painting that's coming up. Can't wait for it to be done, but the prep is just about killing me.

I'm still reeling from Captain's instructions for canning shiners, especially the part about squeezing the crap out and cramming them in jars. Such a vivid image!
Dinner tonight at Chez Sodonewithsal was crabmeat mac and cheese.

you can cook for pennies on the dollar compared to prepared foods dusty . that prepared stuff has about 900 mg of sodium to the serving -- all of it ..
may as well sleep in the brine crock with the kraut , same effect on your body ..

Awesome dinner tonight! Tried a new recipe for rhubarb chutney to use as a sauce for a pork tenderloin roast. Chutney included dried cherries, fresh ginger, garlic, onion, cloves, cumin, cinnamon, and vinegar. Fabulous! Tenderloin is my favorite cut of pork and it is good to have yet another way to serve it.

Sides were 3 roasted veggies: wedges of onions in olive oil/smoked paprika, new potato wedges in olive oil/dill and parsely, asparagus in olive oil/lemon pepper and Parmesan cheese.

For dessert we had sorbet in fruit shells (lemon or small pineapple). If you shop at Costco look for these. Perfect portion size, pretty presentation, and not too sweet.

SusanA43, I usually think the prep is the hardest part of any job. How long with the furniture be huddled together in one room? Good that there will be a nice reward at the end.

What is your goulash like? That terms means so many different things in different parts of the country. I'm curious what yours is.

Kazza~Sorry about the food intolerance/allergy but....I laughed when I read you are having a heat wave. My dad was born and raised in N.I.....upperlands to be exact. I am guessing it is 75 degrees with a heat wave??? Maybe 80?? The one time I was fortunate enough to visit Ireland, there was a drought...6 weeks without rain!!! It is always eye opening to learn what is what in another country compared to where we live. I hope you have some fans to help with heat and hope you find out soon what you can eat without complications.

I went to the grocery store today. I still have my unopened Bullet. I wanted to try to incorporate healthy stuff via a cold drink. So, I checked out the grocery store. One tiny bag of blueberries cost $9.00. Almost every frozen fruit is over $5.00 in tiny packages. I tried to find something of a decent price. I checked the sausages - (other than Hormel hot dogs). Those others were also close to $10.00. Okaaaay... In the end, I realized to make Real food from scratch will cost money. In our household, bills comes first. Then food. I cannot afford to buy these extravagances. I will need to give my Bullet as a gift to someone. And any future recipes I'm going to try will really be based on "poor man's" food.

I have a gift card for Macys. I will use it to buy the basic cooking utensils - like the thermometer, cutting board, grater, strainer (collander)... I don't even have a blender. And I have no plans to buy one. I have a feeling I will never aspire to be an enthusiastic cook like you all. All I want is a real quick and cheap meal.

Dinner tonight was suppose to be the canned chicken noodle soup I bought yesterday. I have diarrhea for the past few days. I'm allergic to mango. We have two trees that produces 2 different types of huge mangos - Hayden and Carabao. I was really really good at not eating any mango this season. Until 3 days ago... That large mango kept calling me every time I passed it on the dining table. I finally cut it up, and only gave dad about 1/5 of it. Ahem... I ate the rest. It was sooooo good going down with a dip made of salt and tabasco drizzled on top. I woke up the next morning, rushing to the bathroom. Ears ringing, stuffed up nose, having the runs... So, I bought chicken noodle soup because it's bland. Except when I came home, sis opened the can and ate it.

So, tonight was the Lean Cuisine chicken fetuccine. For desert, Mocha Almond Fudge ice cream, added some chocolate fudge and since I was still hungry - Cheetos Crunchy potato chips. I wonder if my stomach can handle more ice cream before bedtime? FYI, I told sis not to touch my ice cream.

Jeanne - Goulash for us here in Michigan is like chili with noodles tossed in. So ground beef, tomatoes, tomato sauce, dark kidney beans and spices - usually chili powder, plus noodles of some sort - usually shells, elbows or egg noodles.

What's yours like?

I'm dazzled by some of the fancy dishes you guys prepare. Chutney? Sorbets in hollowed-out lemons and tiny pineapples? Exotic cherry pastries? I do a main course, usually some kind of salad, no meat but sometimes fish, and that's it.
Hubby eats in about two minutes what it takes twenty minutes to prepare, a bad habit from summer camp and boarding school, where the fastest eaters got seconds and the rest were SOL.

Yeh SM the whole country is in a good mood!! its even headline news its hotter here today than RIO!!!!

My boring dinner tonight was salmon steak and brocolli and no icecream! tummy gone down alot so worth starving for! still moody and want to kill someone but have to look at the positives no tummy!! Chromium works wonders for sugar cravings as havnt been tempted but its easy to be healthy when the sun is shinning rain next week so have to stay motivted. Poor cat was just out of sorts too hot for him he wouldnt even let me pet him and is crying all over the place but he finds his little cool spots hes so clever dug up the earth in the garden to get to the cooler soil and sat there nearly joined him! Yep when the sun shines here life is so good you forget about your troubles as we only get about one or two weeks a year if we are lucky!!
I want some rhubard chutney that sounds devine a great idea with pork or any meat really i must get the recipe!

Goulash in Minnesota, the Dakotas, and, I believe, parts of Iowa is a pasta casserole (which here is consistently called a "hot dish") with some kind of tomato sauce, hamburger, often cheese, sometimes veggies such as celery, onion, garlic, green peppers and maybe a few basic seasonings -- thyme perhaps, or oregano. I have never had it with beans. If you feel fancy you might put some bread crumbs on top and bake it. Otherwise, just serve it out of the kettle.

I once went to dinner at the home of a college professor from Hungary. She served us goulash. OMG -- it was NOTHING WHATSOEVER like anything called goulash around here. It was chucks of tender beef and tons of onions and quarts of paprika. It was served (if I remember correctly) over some kind of an egg noodle.

Interesting how that food name got to have so many meanings.

Recently at the nursing home the aide was asking for my mother's lunch order. She described a ground beef dish with tomato sauce and macaroni. My mother just looked confused like she couldn't imagine what that would be. I told her "goulash" and she ordered it! :D

I had to have a dinner that I could mostly make ahead and throw together at the last minute. I made my standard tuna ring salad -- macaroni rings, tuna, hard cooked eggs, mayonnaise, celery, chopped apple, green onions, diced cheddar cheese, and frozen tiny peas. It is a summer comfort food! I have a fish-shaped glass dish that I use only for this salad, and I got it out. We also had the first sweet corn of the year, a fruit plate, and hot-out-the-oven popovers.

I just remembered something served when I was in high school, and sometimes available on diner menus, called chili mac. Sounds like Michigan goulash, right Susan?

I didn't read other thread posts, but saw "chili mac" and had to chime in. They still offer chili mac on a few diner franchise menus across midwest, Steak N Shake and Skyline are two on top of my brain. Love Chili Macs and 3-way or 5-way chili dishes. Just good grub. Ok, thanks for reminding me of some of my favorite food! xo

Sallie, would you mind sharing your Greek salad recipe? I ask because I've been looking to recreate my Greek grandfather's salad of mostly onion, tomatoes, and feta, and I'm not sure what kind of seasoning/dressing. Well, I saw your post, and am just curious how you make yours. :-)
