My name is Dinker me and my wife are retired caregiver for our son Atish  who is 44 yrs of age, when he was in TN in May 2022 has a past history with alcohol addiction, but since over 2 yrs he has not taken any alcohol. May 2022 was sent to have an endoscopy procedure done during the process he went into cardiac arrest. He was admitted to ER with 6% heart functions and hospitalized for 5 weeks and 5 weeks he spent in rehabilitation. His heart function has improved but he was diagnosed with Werneck's Encephalopathy Korsakoff Syndrome. Since then he has lost his short-term memories. We have moved him to TX. Current medicines are managed by psychiatry for depression, and heart functions have improved to 60% but mental and physical health conditions have declined compared to 2023. Currents conditions we take him for a walk with us daily, he takes a shower, and self-dresses up, watches TV, sometimes laughs. He doesn't have any kind of motivation for anything else, accept sleep and relax, doesn't listen to parents, but he does listen to others and follow the instructions. He stays angry but not violent or harmful in any way. It seems he has given up on his life. He is divorced with a 9 years old son staying with ex-wife in TN. Please let us know how you can help.Thank youDinker

Find Care & Housing
You will need to apply for assistance and get ready to put him in a facility of some kind. You will not be able to care for him long term. You need to start looking now and get use to the idea that this will happen. JoAnn29 has a great answer.

Has your son applied for Social Security Disability? At least Supplimental income. With SSD he will get Medicare and maybe Medicaid. With SSI he will get Mericaid.

What kind of help are you looking for? If an aide, Medicaid may pay for this. Your County should have a Social Service Office. Make an appointment with them to see what resourses are available to him.

I'm so sorry for your family's struggles.

However, this is a global, anonymous educational and information-based support forum for caregivers and care receivers. AgingCare is owned by A Place For Mom, which finds Assisted Living housing for seniors. I'm not sure what type of help you're looking for from this site: Medical? Financial?

Please contact social services for your county to see what resources are available for you.
