My sister in law is only 62 years old and has Alzheimer's. My husband (her brother) and I have guardianship. She currently lives by herself but will need a nursing home soon. Her son and daughter want nothing to do with her. Most residents will be older and she doesn't want to go to "where old people" are. Her mother is still alive and thinks there is nothing wrong with her, but that's another story). She wants to move here if she needs to move but I won't be able to take care of her.

That's a tough situation for you and your SIL. I'm OK with a NH, but I hope to be in my 80's when it happens!

Discuss it with the staff of the facility so that she can be around people who may be old, but are lively and fun. You can tell her that she has to live in this part until a room in the "baby boomer" wing is available. As I understand it, most people adjust and accept their placement in 6 months or less, so you might have to be patient.

Don't be afraid of the "therapeutic lie!"

Assisted living, perhaps, or a memory care unit?
