My older sister lives alone abroad and now needs help due to cognitive impairment. Anyone have a french contact for elder law or know of help with navigating this process with a language and country handicap?

Find Care & Housing
I'd suggest contacting an expat forum about this for suggestions regarding your sister's situation - the forum members can let you know how to proceed, available medical resources, and translators to deal with this.
Google "Expat Forums France" and contact as many of them as you prefer.

If your sister lives in Paris, you can also call the "American Hospital" (www.american-hospital.org) for suggestions. In France, hospitals will not accept Medicare so any medical costs will either need to be self pay unless sister has French medical insurance (which would cover almost all medical expenses).

American Hospital has a Geriatrics department. All physicians speak English and the majority of them are from the U.S. If you cannot treat her there you can ask them for advice about how to handle this.

You may want to consider travelling to France to help your sister with this,

Best of luck.

This site is predomently the US. Have some Australians, Canadians, UK and a few other countries chime in. But don't think we have anyone from France. Can you contact the American embassy there to get help for an American living in France?

I know of two in Italy and think I have never had anyone in France.
I am hopeful that the sister, who has been living there, has some friends there? But I cannot myself imagine negotiating a foreign country for care, especially of a USA citizen, and I sure wish this OP the very best of luck.
