My mom is in the beginning stage of Dementia. She had been taking her medicine regularly but now she obsesses over it by constantly counting her pills. I started using one of those weekly pill containers with days of the week/time of day and she still obsess over it. One day I came home and she had taken 2 days of her morning pills. I have taken the pill bottles and keep them hid but I'm wondering now if I should just remove the weekly pill container also.

Since, she's so confused and you don't know really what she's doing when you aren't there, I would be concerned about her actually taking the pills. What if she isn't? My cousin would swear that she took her vitamins, but she had not. She actually thought she had, though.

I would carefully watch how she's doing in other areas too. If she's obsessing, worried, it may due to the changes she's experiencing. With my cousin, these mental changes scared her and made her want someone to be with her at all times. I think that's why she agreed to try Assisted Living. She loved her independence too, but the fear and confusion became too much. She felt safer when she had someone caring for her around the clock.

Single day's dose sounds good to me. Only watch out for her at some point putting the pill in her mouth, finding it feels odd, taking it out again and mashing it under her plate (or just accidentally dropping it, of course - they do get fiddly for elderly fingers). I applaud protecting your mother's independence for as long as possible, though.

If it's the obsessive part that's bothering her then I agree with the chart and stickers idea - she can keep checking that over and no harm done.

We tried the 4x7 pill box and it worked for a while. I filled it weekly. Eventually mom got to the point where she would mix up mornings with evenings. That was when we got her to move to Assisted Living, where someone else would dispense her meds. She had tripled her Coumadin at home and it caused brain bleeding.
