I plan to stay with them until they pass. They are both in pretty good health. Dad had a triple bypass and valve replacement 5 years ago and my Mom has diabetes which is well controlled but her vision is very poor. They are both hard of hearing and very forgetful but pleasant and loving. I am an LPN and think I can handle this but with support. Thank you so much.

You have a long chat with their family doctor about what the options are. If he is a wartime vet, the VA will help. If they have no resources, Medicaid may help them through your county social services office. If your state has a Medicaid waiver program, their MD can order in home care.

Are you living in your parents' home? For how long? Do you know what kind of dementia your father has? I am sure it is getting worse because that is what dementia does. It is a "progressive" disease. Sometimes the progression is slow and sometimes it is rapid, but it always gets worse over time.

Many dementia patients reach a point where it is not feasible (or safe) for them to be cared for by one person in a private home. Either in-home help is needed or placement in a care center.

Tell us more about your situation and both your mother's and father's health. This forum includes caregivers in all kinds of situations and who will be able to share experiences when we know a little more about you.
