I am new to caring. I have x3 elderly clients all over 90 who live in their own home. One lady likes to think she is independent but never leaves home and has carers because she has been hospitalised through not looking after herself. Today, as I tried to make conversation ( my job as a companion/befirender) she tore my head off saying, amongst other things, I was stupid and say stupid things that no-body wanted to hear and why didn't I sit quiet and read something while she read her paper, she wanted total silence so not was not allowed to do any light chores but had to sit there reading for well over an hour 30 minutes- I had two hours with her and found it very awkward. even though I complied and was as pleasant as possible throughout. What shall I do from here?

Find Care & Housing
Dear Newcarer,

I know you are only trying to do your job. And I'm sorry to hear she was so mean to you. I can understand its not easy for a very independent 90 year old to have basically a stranger in her house. And maybe its her meds or medical condition also causing her to lash out. Do the best you can. But I agree with Pam, please let your supervisor know immediately. Document and record her behaviour if necessary for your own protection. Take care.

You shall keep a log of what she does. Maybe even get yourself a nanny cam so you can prove she is the one who does not want you to do chores. I guarantee she tells family you are lazy and stupid and refuse to do any housework. Protect yourself, keep records and report her abuse to your supervisor.
