Is the representative program just to answer for the Social Security check each month? I have helped my Mom who has dementia for years. To change her address, SSA said I had to be a representative payee, close her present checking account and start a new one. Do I have to come off her savings too? The bank says no and everything I read is confusing. I am POA and have been on her accounts for years, helping her. Also does the representative account go back to executor of the will when the beneficiary dies?
When you went to the office to become rep payee they should have given you the paperwork to take to the bank to open the new account. It tells the bank exactly how the account should read.
The old savings account if it’s not POD to you or your not already the co-owner of the account, the same thing will happen to the savings account as well.
Should you go back to SSA office, please ask SSA for an example of how to do the annual report for representative payee. It will just make it easier to keep mom’s paperwork in a way that makes the report easier to get done. Also remember that SS pays the month after AND they have to live the entire month in order for SS to pay for that month. No partial payment. SS will do a clawback from her bank account if overpaid.
