My grandmother has went from independence to total dependence in less than a month due to 2 strokes. She can not get up or down by herself, and to make it worse she has had to go on full time oxygen. She is out of breath after only a mere movement and I am so confused as to how to care for her. Do I keep home health and the therapy coming or do I go to hospice and let her be comfortable and at peace during her old age. I need advice
If it's still early days, I should speak to her doctors and ask them what recovery might be realistic.
If the doctors are gloomy, or if your grandmother has made no progress or has continued to decline since the initial aftermath of the strokes, then I would ask for a hospice evaluation.
But CW is quite right - is your grandmother able to communicate? How does she seem to be coping with what's happened?
I do not think this is terribly unusual following 2 strokes at her age.
I would get her evaluated for hospice ASAP. You need some help caring for her. If she is unlikely to improve, I agree with letting "her be comfortable and at peace during her old age". Can you call today and get the ball rolling?
