My dad's dementia is at a whole new level where he thinks he's either at a restaurant or a movie theatre. He's not recognizing anything in the house. It's disrupting his naps and he has to be led to the bathroom, kitchen, etc. I've added family pictures, including some of him. He hasn't noticed them. His short term memory is gone so any guidance we give is forgotten minutes later. Help please!
Is your dad agitated? If so, I would agree with Babalou and check with his Dr. about getting some anti-anxiety medication. If he isn't agitated then there's nothing wrong with letting him think he's in a restaurant or movie theatre. As you know, dementia is it's own little world and we can't expect our loved ones with dementia to live in this world with us anymore. They aren't able to. We have to go into their world and be with them there. If your dad isn't agitated ask him what he's having for dinner in the restaurant. Ask him what movie he's seeing in the theatre.
But if these new behaviors came on suddenly it's a good idea to get your dad to the Dr. and get him checked out.
