So last week my mother went into the hospital with the coronavirus. She’s been living with my sister and just recently when she went into the hospital I tried calling to get information to see how my mom is doing, and my sister is denying me and my sister and my other brother to get any information on my mom. I don’t know what to do.

My mom was in the hospital with Covid last January. I had power of attorney for her, and even then I only received two reports on her in two weeks.

The best success I had was by calling the case managers at the hospital, but I did have to have POA.

Does this sister that is blocking access have POA over your mom? If not, make sure the hospital knows this.

I agree with asking mom to sign their form giving you the right to ask for updates on her condition. They may not call you but could answer if you ask questions.

Has your sister been being difficult before this?? What a jerk.

If you can speak with your mom get her to sign a HIPAA release for you to get information.

The hospitals will still only call one person to give updates. Otherwise, a patient would have a dozen people on a HIPAA form.

Hospitals are extra busy right now and even in normal times staff does not have the time to update every caller about a patient's condition, that's why only one designated person can get updates (that and privacy laws). My advice is that if you talk to your sister in a non accusatory way you are more apt to get information.
