So much of the time, she doesn’t recognize it as home and keeps asking to go home. My siblings think it wouldn’t make a difference if she were in a facility. Does anyone else experience this and any suggestions on how to handle it?

Find Care & Housing
Cynthia, usually a person who has dementia and is saying they want to go home, the home they are talking about is usually their "childhood home" back when life was easier.... and in some cases, home may mean to be with God.

Your Mom will give you clues as to what home. I know I was confused when my Mom [98] was saying she wanted to go home, but eventually she gave me a clue. She asked if the cattle were out in the field.... ah ha, that meant her childhood home [her parents owned a dairy farm].

I had to use what is called "theraputic fibs" any time Mom said she wanted to go home. Such as saying her parents were out of the country [they use to visit the old country]. Start thinking of excuses, and remember that your Mom may not remember the excuse the next day.

My Mom wanted to visit all of her sisters, so I had to think fast with an excuse that would relate to that certain sister.
