The son has power over them but has now decided to have private caregivers bc our company is too expensive. My only other shift was an overnight & I got here at 10pm & they were already in bed. When I arrived I noticed that the couple hasn’t been showered in a week. Her colostomy bag hasn’t been emptied in a few days let alone replaced. What am I supposed to do. Other family members are aware but say it’s out of their hands. Today is my last shift .

Trixie has this one: You are a mandated reporter. I see from a response below you also noted a hoarded and unsafe home. This gets reported both to your supervisor and to APS by your supervisor IN YOUR PRESENCE or by you, or by you both.

You have an obligation as a mandated reporter I would assume working as a caregiver and you need to either go to your head nurse there and tell him or her what you have noticed and they should take care of it with the caregivers . I would also let your county elder abuse line or state health dept know so they can investigate the facility as well ( you can do this anonymously .. you can’t let that kind of neglect go on .. even if they are transitioning to private care . I’m sure this is the reason they are transitioning them into private .

From what I understand the husbands hospice nurse told him she was going to call APS & so did my boss. I forgot to mention this is a hoarder home! The only rooms you can walk into (barely) are the bedroom, bathroom , & sitting room. Not sure what the private caregivers are actually doing.

You document anything you see.
Observation only no speculation.
This is your last shift with this family.
You move on to another client.
This is part of being a caregiver for an agency.
The son is POA, if you do not think that they are being given proper care and you think there may be abuse of any type, (physical, neglect, verbal) you report it to APS.

It has been reported. Hopefully they will get into a facility that can help both of them. Thank you for the advice.
