My dad is 95 with advanced Alzheimer’s and living in an assisted living facility for 2 years. He is transferred to his wheelchair every morning to join the residents in the common areas for meals and activities that he just watches now. Or sleeps. He currently receives 100% disability from VA aid and attendance, which, with his pension and SS, helps pay for his ALF costs. We children are very involved and one of us visits every day for a few hours to help feed and visit. The ALF recently told us we needed to put dad under hospice care as he is advancing and the staff there can no longer transfer him. We do not want to put dad in a skilled nursing home. We started hospice this week and it has been great for dad with all the care he gets. but hospice only comes by three times a week. The hospice nurses told us we should investigate getting VA home healthcare help so they will send a nurse by a few times a week to visit dad for any needed wound care and such. we do not want to lose dad’s aid and attendance support. Does anyone know if a veteran can qualify for home healthcare visits through the VA while also receiving aid and attendance benefits? Thank you so much.

I would hire a different hospice company. My sister needed wound care and the hospice company provided that service and all the products for the care. Sounds like this hospice company is looking to cut costs while billing Medicare for services they should be providing.

3 different companies to provide service is not the norm and causes red flags for me.

Contact the VA and ask to talk to a Social Worker or Patient Advocate.
If your dad is 100% if there is a VA facility near you that might be the best option. And the VA does have Hospice. If there is no VA facility near you the VA Hospital will probably have Hospice "wing" that they would place him in.
I know you don't want to put dad in Skilled Nursing but that may be necessary for the care that needs to be done, just for his safety.
AL can not use equipment to transfer him so it greatly limits them as far as getting him up. And it they can not move him easily he is at more risk for pressure sores.

We don’t really want to move him. The ALF is close to the kids so we can visit frequently. All is working well now, just asking if anyone knows if we can have VA Home Health Care visits to the ALF if he also has Aid and Attendance.
Hospice recommended we do this to assist with any wound care as they don’t do that.
