My mom passed away last summer. My brother is now living with my husband and I. All of the places that he use to go to are now closed due to the Pandemic. I was wondering how others are coping.

I am not in your shoes but I wonder if you brother has a worker through the Department of Developmental Disabilities or equivalent in your area who can visit?

With my elderly Mom, her contacts outside of the home are shrinking, more and more. I am encouraging her brother to reach put to her. He can give her a sense of identity/dignity outside of the household.

If your brother has something he likes to do in the yard, such as weeding, this is very helpful. I think it has kept my Dad sane.

Thank you so much for your reply!

My brother is 68 and has the capacity of a 4 year old in the motor skills area and comprehension of perhaps a 3 yr old or less at times. He suffered brain damage at birth so the brain has some areas that function well and others not so much. He has a good memory at times. He has a case worker who checks in with him once a month or more and we just started a Zoom meeting session yesterday via the Bluebonnet Trails organization here in Texas for our area. The ones attending are not in his normal group but from other areas. I am reaching out to his other brothers(he has 5) to call and give his a sense of connection. The strange thing is, with his disability, he really doesn't seem to actually enjoy anything but rather will do the activity because I ask him to. It seems he really misses his old routine with his group, bowling, Day Hab, movies, eating out. We all miss our old routine.

I appreciated your saying, having a sense of identity/dignity, that makes a lot of sense. I will continue trying all that I can.

That care and stay safe!
