What experience have the home caregivers had with the bed mattress to minimize pressure sores? We use an alternating air mattress topper also, which our wound care doctor says is the best thing to do. But I’m speaking of the underlying mattress that works well with a hospital bed motions.

Medicare will pay for a specialty mattress, if warranted. You need prior authorization first. I made a mistake and accepted a mattress my moms primary prescribed and I wish it was an air mattress. They will pay for one or the other in my experience. My mom does not feel comfortable with the pressure mattress. Prefer the air mattress that plugs in, and is similar to the hospital kind. Try going through Medicare with doctors order first before purchasing one.

I'm trying to remember what we used for Daddy when he became bedridden. I am pretty sure that Hospice was involved at that point and a mattress purchased through a DME store was the answer. I know he had an alternating air mattress topper, which was a blessing! But underneath that---I think working with a DME store may be the answer.
