Mom received VA benefits in March. Due to her Alzheimer's a fiduciary needs to be appointed. We originally applied for benefits in August - so her back pay will be from August 2016 - February.

I received a letter in June stating a field agent will be contacting me soon. I still haven't heard anything. I made several calls to the VA and when I finally got through - they stated the case is still active and a field agent will be calling me. Anyone have any experience on how long this process will take to get the back pay and a fiduciary appointed?

Mom received her back pay in September. It took and year and a month. I was contacted on September 9th a Saturday and interviewed the next day on Sunday. The field agent wanted to see mom to confirm that she was not able to handle her own affairs and a background check on me had to be completed on me. Once that was done, I had the check within 2 weeks.

The field agent told me that they were way behind and short staffed. He was passing through town and was asked to contact a few people that were waiting to become a fiduciary. Boy do I feel lucky. Never expected anyone to call me on a weekend and I am glad I met with him.

Hopefully you've made some progress... Initially I sent in the "intent to file" as it would, if approved, apply back payments to that date (allows a year to complete filing - we needed time to get the documents, esp service). Once that was done, before applying, I sent in the representative payee or whatever it is they call it (we have FOUR federal entities to deal with - Pension, SS/Medicare, IRS and VA, none of whom honor any form of DPOA!) I actually had to call them a while later, to see if they approved it - apparently they do not send out any confirmation!

As with most federal (applies to others as well) entities, there is probably a backlog as there are not enough agents and/or hours in a day to get all these done! I need to redo one paper and then send it all in (hopefully everything is right and we get approved!), I am just "papered out" - Despite there being three of us (two brothers), I am the one handling all the paperwork, coordinating and chauffeuring appointments, taking calls from the facility and making decisions, yadda yadda... We found some old charge cards, two of which, thankfully, were closed due to inactivity, but the other two... act of congress just to get them to CLOSE IT!!!

Anyway, I cannot let you know how long it takes, but PLEASE do update us if/when you get movement!! I will be interested to know as I need to send in all the forms SOON!
