My dad also has mild Afib. He is being given oxygen. While in the hospital he had a “multiple seizure” and pneumonia. He cannot respond to instructions. He cannot move himself and already breaths heavy. He hasn’t really eaten much and now for the last 4 days is not allowed even water for fear of aspiration. Maybe the NG tube will do more harm than good?
I hope your family will consider merciful comfort care and discuss Hospice with all doctors involved. If they have not suggested Hospice to the family I as a nurse feel they are being negligent in their duty to their patient.
I am terribly sorry for all your father is enduring, and all your grief.
I would call Hospice in to evaluate. If Dad was showing signs of not being able to swallow, that was the first sign that the body was shutting down.
The body knows when food and fluids are no longer necessary and not eating or drinking does not cause the same feelings in a dying person as you or I experience hunger or thirst.
PLEASE watch Hospice Nurse Julie on YouTube she has some great down to earth explanations about dying, tube feeding and a whole host of other info.
I would have the tubes removed, this includes any IV's and have Hospice take over his care.
Sorry.....
