ZZzzzquil works great.........check with the doctor and see if it's ok for your dad to use that with CHF, or if it could be an issue. My 93 y/o mother uses it, but it does make her tired the next morning. The doc does not like to prescribe real sleeping pills for obvious reasons, but a good night's sleep is imperative for the elderly! My mother also takes melatonin & swears it does absolutely nothing for her at all. She also has CHF but it's not TOO far advanced. Her exhaustion can be all-consuming at times, and she's frequently out of breath as well. If she had her druthers, she'd want to be knocked out COLD every night as with Ambien, but the last time she was using Ambien, she fell asleep on the toilet and broke her foot after stumbling into the bath tub when trying to find her way back to bed. That was many years ago when she was younger, healthier, and ambulatory.

My dad has end stage congestive heart failure, which can last a long time. Oxygen is not indicated, actually would do more harm. He also has frequent trouble sleeping. He uses both melatonin and ZQuil to help, neither are habit forming and his docs are fine with it.

Is he on oxygen? (I know probably a stupid question but..) Is he getting the correct amount of oxygen?
Is he on Hospice? If so ask them to check the oxygen levels. If he is not on Hospice contact the doctors office.
This may also be part of the disease process and he may continue to decline. Something to talk to his doctor or Hospice about.
