He has really short term memory, and is totally relying on me being with him. I am looking into senior care a couple of days a week, I do not use the word daycare. What questions do I ask when evaluating a senior care facilities? The sad part is that I just can not see him coloring or tossing a ball back and forth. He doesn't wander when I'm around but I can not count on that if I were to leave him there for a couple of hours.

Sunnygirl1, my husband has 3 forms of dementia according to the last batch of tests done in 2011. FTD, AD and Vascular dementia. I have POA for husband and now sign everything for him, as he can not sign. I almost feel like I could give him more of a quality of life if he were in an adult day care a couple of days a week. I need to socialize him while giving me some me time.

Has he been diagnosed with dementia? Are you his DPOA and HCPOA? Are you asking about a Senior Day Care facility or an Actual AL facility that provides day services? I think they are different, based on the ones that I have seen.

I'd be upfront with the facility about your concerns. What happens if he gets up and just tries to walk out? What kind of documents do they need? Will they try to distract him until you arrive if he tries to leave on his own accord? Are they a secure facility?

They should have a schedule that details their activities. They have things that should amuse those who are higher functioning, but, I'd keep in mind that patients don't remain high functioning. It's painful to envision, but, as they progress they will not be able to participate in things that require a lot of focus and thought.
