My mom's doctor ordered her to a skilled nursing facility for rehab and therapy. They said her Medicare and Insurance covers all expenses. She is to stay there 3 weeks. Will they also take her ss income?

Medicare only pays the first 20days 100%. 21 to 100 days 50%. After 100 days patient pays. If she has a supplimental they will pay all or some of the outstanding balance. With my Mom it was going to cost her $150 a day from the 21st to 100 days. If she doesn't have the money she may be able to apply for Medicaid. The Social Worker and finance person should be able to help you here.

The Medicaid that takes ur SS and pension is for longterm nursing care that Medicare is paying for.

Has your mother been in the hospital for three days prior to this period of rehab?

If so, no, Medicare will cover the stay in full for 21 days as long as she participates in therapy and is making progress. Staff at the SNF will let you know if she is not.

Take a few moments NOW to familiarize yourself with the difference between Medicare (medical insurance  everyone over 65 is eligible for, which does not have any "means test" (you can have any amount of money and get its benefits) and which does not ask for repayment after services and MEDICAID which is a program for folks with low income and assets under $2000.

Medicare will pay for REHAB but not long term care.

Medicaid will pay for long term care in certain circumstances but you need to meet income and asset eligibility criteria. You can still own a home and a car and get Medicaid.

That is the short version; there's lots more, but probably just what you need to know for now.
