Find Care & Housing
I think that you best prepare for the future which is bleak. Someone with alzheimer's / dementia will reach the point where one person doing 24/7 is not possible. They will need a nursing home or a memory care unit. Look into her qualifying for Medicaid now if she lacks money. If she has a lot of money, then spend it down on things directly related to her care so that Medicaid will not question anything when they look back for 5 years. To quit your job to take care of her is noble but it endangers your own retirement and health insurance coverage.

You will need to see if she qualifies for Medicaid and if they will pay you something. If they do, it will not be enough to live on. This is the most frequently asked question and does not have a good answer. Most adult children caregivers are not paid, but some are paid by their parents using an employment contract.
