You can try adding it to oatmeal or oat bran. It melts completely and it isn't distinguishable whatsoever.

My English is not good and I can not explain all I accomplished last 4 years bu now I have only yearly doctor visit and I use only blood pressure medication Atenolol 25mg. But I had a lot of problems with my health and healthy food change everything.
Sample my healthy breakfast; 2 spoon oath meal, one bak Stevia sugar, one spun dray cranberry, one spun pumpkin seeds, one spun walnuts, one spun grained flax seeds, one spun the chia,one tea spun cinemon, and one cup boiled water. light cucking about 5 nin and culling about 5 nin then put one spun coconut oil and one tea spun honey. Enjoy healty brekfast. All I use is Organic.

Coconut oil has a pleasant taste and works very well as a substitute seasoning for butter, in vegetables, spread on bread, etc. Even though there is some controversy as to how effective it really is and for how long, I've just started using it. If it isn't harmful and helps in any way, go for it!

About 6 months ago,I did put my 95 year old mom on coconut oil in the capsule form and I did notice an improvement right away. I use 1000 mg a day. She is eating a bit more a day too since then. She sleeps all night.

Man, there is some excellent sharing going on in this thread. Thanks to you all for sharing. I had heard about Dr. Newport's husband some years ago and I had heard he had issues later on but not sure what all that was about. I do know she's involved in the Fuel for Thought clinical trials going on now and I'm waiting to see what the results will be when released in Sept. Sometimes I'm critical of how testing is done, but still curious. It's a product being used in testing for dementia and alzheimer participants.

I watch Dr. Richard Becker's of Bioinnovations net program on familynet and he's really good also. I've seen Dr. Perlmutter on his program along with Dr Eric Braverman. I have learned so much about health. The one thing I hear from them is fats are critical to brain health as well as heart. I think they said our brains are about 60% fat. They talk about dementias and how the low fat high carb, high processed diet has ruined us. They talk about omega 3s a lot, coconut oil, and nut oils like walnut to use for cooking and meals. Basically they encouraged the mediterranean diet but said regardless reduce saturated fat in fried foods, breads and pastries, etc.

My mom's new doctor agreed too and said high inflammation causes many a disease in our day. Said that's why these good fats are so important to get into the diet, along with a good supplement or two, more veggies, fruits and less bread, cake, sugar and fried or processed protein. I all but fell out of the chair.

As hard as it can be sometimes, I'm certainly learning a lot about health from my mom and my husband suffering from cancer. Thankfully his tumor has shrunk a lot and we follow this same diet and supplementation. He takes sulindac and tamoxifen but even the oncologist said he had never seen a tumor (desmoid) shrink so fast in any patient he has had over the years.

He said keep doing what you're doing and maybe we can reduce his meds. Said it's hard politically to get research funds into naturals and frustrates him to no end, because even if he wanted to suggest some of these to his other patients, he really can't and have the backing he needs. I thought whoa that's really beyond sad. That's why it's so important to get the word out like now.

I use coconut Unrefined oil about 4 years. It is healthy staff and I use in many different ways. we should use 2 table spoon daily for the best result.It is very delicious with peanut butter, with jam like one slice bred put one spoon coconut oil other slice of bred put some jam and put together like sandwich.

Patrice, I tried giving my dad coconut oil in capsule form, and it didn't seem to help much. I think taking it in pure, organic, natural form is best. I started using it myself in coffee in the morning and find it clarifies my mind better than caffeine! (I drink only decaf because I'm too sensitive to caffeinated coffee anyway.) I'm trying to think how I could get it into my dad's diet at his ALF. Has anyone tried broaching this subject with ALF nursing management/staff if you have a loved one in assisted living?

When I first started noticing my mother's memory loss I recommended coconut oil. In 2009 I had seen Dr. Mary Newport's amazing initial reports on giving it to her husband. This is an update - youtube/watch?v=_9INyTTXfR0

My mother lives in a remote area, so three years ago I ordered/shipped some from an organic source online.

I live far away, but I could hear the difference in our phone conversations. She was having a much easier time with words, names and places. She was doing well when she decided it upset her stomach and stopped. Her decline since then has been heartbreaking.

When I recommended it to her, I was putting it in my own coffee - with cream to mask the ickiness. Now I take a big chug from the jar every night before bedtime. It's gross and it does upset my tummy but I feel a noticeable difference in my own clarity. (I'm a freelance writer - if I'm not sharp I can't pay the mortgage.)

My grandmother died of dementia, my mother is already 'gone' and I figure I'm next.

Dr. Andrew Weil says there is no reason to NOT try coconut oil. We don't hear about it because nobody gets rich from natural solutions.

Also please check out Dr. David Perlmutter, author of Grain Brain. He's here in Florida. I have zero doubt that there is a connection between grain, sugar and Alzheimer's/dementia. My mother was the reigning Queen of Sugar and Baked Goods. I used to get sick every time I went up for a visit. I blogged about it here - with before and after pictures.

most people today are missing strays mineral and vitamins that are no longer in our foods. my grandmother went to a natural path doctor after the doctors gave her two months to live. npd found she needed spirlina, hemp oil, coconut oil, goji berries, pawpaw fruit, ect she lived for another 15 years. see what your loved one are missing so they can come back to you

there is coconut oil available in a capsule form on Walmart shelves in the vitamin section, I personally add it to my coffee it does not change the taste

I buy organic coconut oil in capsules from swansonvitamins and it's usually on sale for less than 3 dollars. Mom takes 4 capsules a day. I take 2. We take it for digestive health mainly and regularity which it helps tremendously. I'm not sure how much it helps her mentally because she has been on it for quite some time but her decline plateaus and has slowed since taking it. She also takes vitamin E and krill oil. Coconut oil has many wonderful uses - great for your skin and to cook with too. Try using it in a box cake instead of vegetable oil.

I saw coconut oil expose' on Dateline or 20/20 years ago. I use it everyday. My grandmother had dementia and so does my mom. I figure it can't hurt. I didn't have a chance to try it on my mom before she went into facility and she is too far declined now to try.....maybe.....who knows. I was giving coconut oil to my husband for a long time due to his dementia, I'm ashamed to say lately I've only been giving it to him in his cereal in the morning. My daughter came to help and turned up her nose at the flavor so I wasn't giving it to him every day three times a day. (I WILL START IT AGAIN.) As I was using it in vegetables at dinner instead of butter. You can spread some on one side of a sandwich instead of butter under condiments. There was a book written about coconut oil benefits for dementia. Alzheimer's Desease, "what if there's a cure? Written by Mary Newport, M.D. Regarding her efforts to help her husband.
My doctor was all for using it. It is a saturated fat, but your body assimilates it differently then the other saturated fats. A recipe, in the book, which optimizes the benefits and liquifies the hard oil is in the book. It is: 12oz pure coldpressed virgin coconut oil ( you can melt it by placing container in warm water) and 16 oz of NOW MCT oil it is 100% pure made out of the coconut oil and the ketones worked faster and with hard pack coconut oil, extends the affects. You mix this and put in a bottle . 1 tablespoon three times a day with meals or however you decide to administer it. Also buttering sandwich with coco oil counts as a dose.
You can use it for cooking!! It's good for you too!! Thank you for jump starting me again!!!

You will NEVER see coconut oil advertised as a possible remedy for memory loss because big pharma won't make any money on it. In fact, they'll do everything in their power to push any potential benefits under the rug so they can get doctors to prescribe their insanely expensive prescription medications that don't work & have more side effects than benefits. The only way to get the word out there is to network, like this as well as posting things online, telling all your friends about it & hope they tell their friends, etc.

I know this is a little off topic, but I rescued a Golden Retriever last year and she had a horrible problem with flaky skin, hot spots and hair loss on her back and tail! The hair she had was coarse and dry. I have another Golden and his hair is just naturally full and soft. Anyway I started adding a tablespoon of Coconut oil on their dry dog food and they loved it and her hair and skin immediately improve!

Yes, there are coconut oil in "soft gels". As a care manager, I'm asked frequently by families if they should give coconut oil to their parents with a memory impairment . One tip: Giving too much ( oil form) can cause diarrhea.

I have not tried or heard of this, but I just came back from a conference and met Paul Cox, a research scientist. He is conducting trials on the use of L-Serine, which you can buy in power form. It is also present in such foods as seaweed, egg whites, organic pork and fish. Paul is the head of the Institute for Ethnomedicine.

I've heard we should use raw coconut oil if it's used uncooked, and refined coconut oil for cooking. Raw has the benefits of having enzymes in it. But heat destroys enzymes, so no need to use it raw for cooking.

I dont know the difference between refined and unrefined but food babe on face book recommends unrefined. I just want to warn anyone who has swallowing issues to be careful as it might be to slippery by the spoon. Scrambling my Moms eggs or a muffin and then pureeing it is how I have to do it as my Mom is late stage dementia/alz. Anything too slippery or sweet will get her gagging. Just an fyi as you are all at different stages. It also will get too hot toooo fast in a frying pan so dont leave it for a second. I myself do not like coconut and was so surprised that there really isnt much different taste wise when cooking with it except a bit sweeter. Love it for cooking home fries, grilling english muffins, etc. I get mine at christmas tree shop!

My wife stayed in bed most of the day, couldn't talk except "yes or no" and gibberish. couldn't walk without support, stopped reading although a lifelong avid reader, was easily confused, could not put a key in a door lock, needed help in the bathroom, etc, etc.

I started her on 1/2 tbs of virgin coconut oil twice a day, and worked up to 2 tbs twice a day in about 10 days. She showed improvement almost immediately in all categories, and now after 3 months of full dosage, the change has been astounding..

She stays up during the day, reads a lot again, watches TV and laughs at appropriate points, walks without help, is vastly more alert, talks, (but still tangles words up), is much more aware of bathroom problems, but still needs a little help.

Memory and reasoning has also improved, but not as much as the physical things. It seems to me the improvement may be slowing somewhat, still improving, but at a slower rate. We both (I take the oil too) have totally eliminated allergy problems (runny nose, sneezing). She is 77, I am 83.

Coconut oil becomes a liquid over 76 degrees. I leave the container on the hot water heater to keep it liquid all the time. Cook with it, and put it on most anything.

My wife also takes Aricept and Namenda (because the neurologist prescribes them, IMO they are useless), and I attribute her vast improvement to coconut oil. I don't know what the long term effects will be, and am sure effects will vary with the individual, but the cost is small, can't hurt, and may help.

PS for the ladies - My wife's hair went from drab gray to shiny, full bodied, and I swear the gray is getting darker.

I had heard coconut oil was good to help with Dementia. I bought it and started cooking with it but never gave it to my husband in a spoonful. Since reading this post I think I will start giving him a small dose each day and see what happens. I bought mine at a health food store. It is called Premium Coconut oil. Since cooking with it I notice it has helped with my digestive system so I guess it helps to lubricate the intestines. Will post again after giving it to my husband for about a week and let everyone know how it is working.

I use vitacost to purchase stuff too and good point on starting out slowly in smaller dosage. She didn't do that but it helps with her poo which helps me so I don't get to hear about constipation problems throughout the day. Still, I agree slow and steady.

I take coconut oil, and would suggest starting in small amounts and working your way up to the dosage you want. It might make you poo, if suddenly start with a couple of tablespoons. I take mine in hot coffee.

Hi, Sorry I'm late responding. My mom takes the coconut oil straight by the tablespoon in the morning with her breakfast along with the omega 3s. I'm sure there are other products, maybe better, but she does well with taking Nature's Way Liquid Coconut Premium Oil. She then takes a tablespoon of Carlson's Norwegian MedOmega fish oil concentrate lemon lime right after that. She also takes healthdirect liquid multivitamin, kyolic curcummin and jarrow's vitamin d at lunch. She take her meds in the morning and night (insulin, bp and heart meds in AM, statin (20mg atorvastatin) at night. She goes to the doctor every couple months and her vitals have improved, especially her cholesterol. Her doctor knows too what she takes and watches it closely. She said a month ago her numbers were excellent given her health problems. It took about a week for her to get back to where she was before her eye surgery. I can't say it's a cure all with all of this, but so far it's not hurting her and she's lucid most of the time. She has hallucinations but even they are not quite as bad, has the repeating and short term memory, but again not too bad. Yesterday, she was more like herself than in a long time. When I get her to get on the treadmill most days I also notice she does a lot better. And we're working on cutting down the carbs and sugar just a bit more too. One thing, when I get her to take the second tablespoon of coconut oil in the afternoon her symptoms like sundowning and such are greatly reduced. She is 86. Hope this helps some. Jacky

Wow, I just put some in her cereal today!! I know how many great uses there are I have never heard this....How wonderful I will keep you posted thank you for all of your suggestions, on the omega 3's and olive oil!!
