Grandpa is 98, house bound, blind but in generally good health. DAY time he wears depends, athletic gym pants (no buttons or belts now), special day socks as well as long sleeve buttoned shirts and a buttoned cardigan sweater. He complains about buttons with his feeble hands and getting cold when changing for bed. TYPICAL TIME A SUNDOWNER WILL START. NIGHT time he changes to night socks and a calf long night shirt, watching it stays dry with multiple toilet trips.

Would a DAY time long sleeve blended stretch turtle neck shirt that he could continue to wear over NIGHT and change in the morning, plus a pajama bottom and regular depends, This would be less frustrating and warmer both day and night. Of all our daily routines together, his mood can change with the bedtime day clothes to night clothes routine. Mornings never seem to be a problem getting dressing even with buttons?

Thermal long underwear made for outdoor activities very warm, light weight and easy to get in and out of.

When my dad went to bed, he would wear the same clothes that he wore in the day time (insulated Flannel shirt, long sleeved shirt underneath, ski vest over the flannel shirt, sweatpants and socks). He was warm, no matter what time it was and he wanted to do it because it was getting harder for him to change clothes for bedtime. I would recommend machine washable quilts and/or heavy (easy to wash) Afghans. The quilts and afghans are nice and warm. Maybe wearing some long john bottoms underneath the night shirt would be helpful? Can you use a portable heater to warm up his room an hour or two before he goes to bed? Just unplug the heater after he gets into bed.

Layers are good for warmth, start with an undershirt t-shirt or vest, then a pullover fleece sweater, the undershirt can be left on overnight. I liked using the jogging pants because they were appropriate as both day and night wear, they only needed changing as they became soiled.

A couple thoughts.

A turtle neck shirt may be hard to pull over his head.

What about a regular undershirt or a merino wool blend base layer? And yes leave it on for 24 hours and change it in the morning.

What about a zippered wool cardigan instead of a button up one?

Dad is a few years younger and wears a long sleeved t-shirt, cotton shirt and a vest pretty much year round now.

Are you warming his night shirt and bed? A mattress heating pad may not be appropriate if he wets the bed, but a small heating pad can be used to warm up the bed. Toss the night shirt and socks in the dryer for a few minutes before he gets changed.

On really cold nights, I put on my PJ's an hour or so before bed. That way I am not putting on cold night clothes and getting into a cold bed at the same time.
