Hello. When our mom was in the nursing home, we met with the social worker at the home. Mom had her own Dr who she was able to keep, and he also had patients there. Ask if maybe her own Dr is on their list. Let them know you would like her own Dr but also see if her Dr is willing to come there, if not you'll have to take her for appt. Any specialist, mom was able to keep, no problem, but we took her. Also, keep tract of any medication they give her!! Ask the social to keep in touch with you on any new meds given to her. Meet with the social worker and ask any questions you want no matter what they are! Hope this helps!!

To treeartist... Also, when you use their own Dr the home has be aware they see many patients, and it won't be as personal as her own. You might not be there when they do rounds, and so you don't get to hear what they say. That's why I'd check the meds to make sure you know what the staff Dr, takes away, or gives. Especially if your mom is on meds for behavior. Mom had dementia, and was given the wrong meds by a different Dr! Don't be afraid to speak up on what you don't agree with, or want.

None! The nh doctor looks after everything, which isn't much - mainly pain control with tylenol, thyroid meds, and antidepressants.

My grandmother didn't have any either. She had one doctor at the nursing home and that was it. I do worry about doctors abusing seniors in this way by overcharging for visits they don't need. We had a terrible story in our community about a doctor still billing for patients that had passed away.
