I need to apply for a new Medicare card for my mom as she has misplaced hers. We are not in the area where the new cards are being mailed currently. I also would like to explore her Social Security benefits as it seems like her current benefit is low. Thanks

Social security generally doesn’t make mistakes. When you begin the process to start receding payments, they tell you what your benefit will be. Other than COLA, you don’t get usually get any increases unless your spouse dies and his benefit was higher than yours-and in that case you receive the higher amount. Social security payments are low, I think the maximum payment is $2639 now? My MIL worked 30+ years and only got $1700 a month. They don’t usually pay you a livable wage unless you live somewhere with a low cost of living. $1700 a month in California is far from a livable wage.

In order to prove that a benefit is understated, you would have to compare her earnings record with SSA to actual records, such as W-2's and tax returns, to determine if certain amounts weren't properly reported. This would most likely prove to be exceedingly difficult because most people would not retain records long enough to make a difference. If the low benefit is due to either your mother or her husband underreporting income on their tax returns, then that may open up a whole new can or worms that you don't want to get involved with since the IRS may be looking to get paid for unpaid income taxes.

You may need to go to your local SS office with a copy of your POA so they will speak with you. I’m not certain you could get into her account online. Don’t count on getting more money, though. SS doesn’t make mistakes. When I called, I was told by the agent, “You’re getting everything from us that you’re going to get!” Nice, huh?
