What a wonderful movie about taking care of a narcissistic parent! It brilliantly shows all the constant micro-injuries that feel like Chinese water torture to the adult caregiving child, the difficult rivaling sibling relationships, the childhood trauma of not having been seen. I love the moment when the Adam Sandler character finally breaks free from his self-entitled artistic a**hole father played by Dustin Hoffman - so powerful...!
It perfectly captures the adult child's futile desire to finally be loved and accepted as well as the painful insight that this will never happen and that the only freedom lies in walking away.
