Just found out my Mom should be eligible for medicaid. I was surprised to hear my Mom would more than likely qualify for 4 hours mornings & afternoon! Going to fill out the forms, its a 3-4 month wait. Since its home care, I also can keep Moms ss and pension for her care. Sounds too good to be true, anyone have any info?
At first he went to an Adult Day Health Center a few days a week (paid for by the county). That was a wonderful experience! If that is available to you, I recommend it. Even once a week is a nice change of scenery and other adults to talk to. When my husband needed too much are for the day program to be suitable, he approved for a personal care attendant at home for 32 hours a week. Awesome! Through out the journey they provided one-a-week housecleaning.
Perhaps more similar to your situation is the period when our mother lived with my sister. Mom continued to be eligible for housekeeping (of her area of the house only) which was provided by our handicapped brother (who put in more hours there than he was paid for. Also Mom was eligible for a home aide a certain number of hours and my sister could choose to take that pay herself or have someone else come in. Mom paid my sister the same amount she had been paying for subsidized housing. I imagine that your mom would pay you some of her income for room and board.
My mom lived with my sister for 14 months before her condition worsened and she needed a nursing home.
The "too-good-to-be-true" situation was much less expensive for the state than what it costs them now that she is in a nursing home. For this reason more and more states are trying to delay the need for long term care homes by providing in-home care and allowing relatives to be paid the same as strangers would for some care activities.
So congratulations that you apparently live in an enlightened state! I hope Mom's stay with you is long and (mostly) happy!
