Present rent in wonderful retirement community is $582 monthly. That taken from monthly social security of $1760 gives me enough to pay bills and have a bit left over. I'm fully aware that comfortable assisted living is going to cost more than I'm able to afford. However, I need to know what is out there, so that I can get my options in a row.

Thanks for your help,

John

Find Care & Housing
John, I live in Plano, TX. There are many facilities in our area; however, most start at $2300 a month. Everything is all inclusive at my mother's assisted living facility, so you will only need funding for personal items. Are you a Veteran? My mother is getting a VA Pension since my father served in WWII.
If you do not have medical problems, stay where you are as long as you can.

J. You are very wise to look in to "care" in advance. Perhaps if you really enjoy living where you are you could look at getting some homecare and stay where you are for now? Or.. if you have an extra bedroom you could offer a semi-retired person free room and board in exchange for care? There are several options for you I think.

j - 74... you are still a kid! So how is your health and who do you see for a physician? Is there something out there health-wise that is of concern? If so, I'd suggest that you set up an appointment to get into the gerontology group with UT/Southwestern (Univ of Texas Health Science Center) in Dallas. I'm pretty sure all the UT health science centers have a full gerontology program that also have social services units. They will have info on all sorts of IL, AL, NH and rehab available in the region. Many of the MD's with Southwestern will also be the medical directors or medical specialists affliated for the facility. But what would be especially good is to evaluated by the gerotology department to see what, if any, brain aging is happening with you. So that you can start on medication to keep as tippy-top good in brain health. My mom's docs are with a UT gerontology program and they were able to specifically & accurately detail what type of care she would need. She has Lewy Body Dementia and the nature of Lewy is that they are functional, competent and totally cognitive for a long long time. SHe is mid90's now and her long term care facility MD is affliated with UTSA Health Science Center for medical care but they are also affliated with "tiered" facilities that go from IL to AL to NH. There are several tiered facilities in TX, Morningside Ministries and AirForce Village are both large multi facility ones in central Texas. In theory, you move along from IL to AL to NH as your needs change. I bet there is something like this up in Dallas/Sherman corridor area too. Good luck.

John, Assisted living means different things to different people. Make a list of what is needed and important and go from there. There are 'free' services that will help you identify help near you. You might start with the office of aging in your community. BUT you have to be able to state exactly what is important. Assisted living in the NE means housing, meals, housekeeping, med dispensing, assistance with bathing, etc etc. ($5-9,000 a month). Perhaps all you need is barrier free design and transportation services to shopping areas. That is a whole different thing. Good luck with your search.
