Yes, some ALs take short term folks. They call this respite care. It seems to depend upon whether or not they are full! But I just visited someone in AL and saw Respite Care on one room. Call around to a few in your area and check them out.

Yes. I'd suggest you do a trial run for maybe a short week to see if the AL is a good fit for your DH and vice-versa. If his needs are a gait and medications a "younger resident" AL would be better than 1 that is more at the edge of needing NH type.

Yes; many AL or memory care facilities offer short term care or respite care. My FIL has done this when my MIL wanted to travel. As long as they have room, many will do this for 1 week; two weeks or even longer. It was about $150/day but included room and board, activities, transportation, meals and was wonderful! Thats cheaper than a hotel stay and much safer and provides the caregiver with peace of mind. My FIL only needed minimal looking in on so he was basically mobile and able to take care of himself.

My MIL had previously hired in-home care a few hours each day -- but this option wasn't good as my FIL kept dismissing them early, etc. and then missed meals or meds while my MIL was away. She didn't have any peace of mind as they called her about things while she was away.

The respite care was perfect as she checked him in a couple days before her trip and then once she got home; she left him there an extra couple days while she got re-settled back at home; got groceries, laundry, rested up, etc.

He did great and enjoyed the regular meals and socialization. IT was a vacation for both.
