There's a history of diabetes in my family...I mean EVERYONE over a certain age has it. Well I tested my blood this morning and I was at 200..tested thru the day and I ranged from 198 to 319. Oh h*ll I do not want to be diabetic. I can't stand the thought of giving myself a shot. What are my chances of just cutting out sugar and bringing it down like that? Could it be stress? Or because I am not feeling well? or am I not feeling well because my blood sugar is high? ARGH....I know, I know...I need to go the doctor but lort I don't have $200 right now.

Have you been monitoring your glucose level for awhile but this last time was the highest? It doesn't get that high so quickly, unless as Pam's BIL discovered it was from substances on his hands.

Research diabetic diets and follow the advice given on changing your diet.

I would also do some research to determine if there are any clinics in your area which provide free, lower cost, or payment plan care. Also research Hill Burton hospitals and clinics - it's my understanding that those who have accepted funding pursuant to this federal act are required to provide care to indigents.

Don't you have any health care plan at all?

My BIL tested his sugar and it was 234 and he freaked out and called me. He had not washed his hands. Plus he was eating a bag of nachos. So after he thoroughly washed and dried his hands, he retested and it was normal.

wantingtime, watching your diet will help, but with the numbers you mentioned it should be combined with seeing the doctor. Stress will contribute to higher blood glucose, but living stress free can be hard to do. If you do want to try to go medicine-free as possible, a balanced diet with some carbs and exercise will help. When you go to the doctor, he/she won't necessarily put you on insulin. It may be that a medicine such as Metformin will be enough to keep the blood sugar in check. Your doctor will know for sure.

I know what you mean about not having the money. I agree with what Boni wrote about the complications that can have either higher costs. Your glucose levels are not out of sight yet, so it is probably the best time to see your doctor. I hope that it is either just a temporary thing or that it can be treated with oral medication. That would be good.

Stay off or limit everything white; flour, sugar, rice, milk. Fresh veggies and lean meat should make up the largest amount of your diet.
There is all kinds of info online. Read the nutrition info on any package you cook with or plan to eat for carbs/serving. Seeing your doctor is the best thing to do.

Good luck!

YES! Cut out the sugar and carbs and start moving right away. Walking is best to start with. Yes, it can be controlled with diet and exercise. You can stop it or at least hold it at bay for a while if you do. The shot is the easiest part of the disease. Losing your sight or your leg (God Forbid) and loads of other stuff really sux. Good luck!
