What is the cause? I caught a virus that caused my heart's ejection fraction to go down to 20% for awhile, but it is back to normal now. I was pretty sick for a couple of years, but getting the right cardiologist is key.

That's pretty low - if it is real chronic and the person does not have much exertion, liek some of my muscular dystrophy patients, they mark perk along for a while - is he on any medicaiton for it? More important, what does his cardiologist say about the cause and the prognosis?

If you mean his ejection fraction is 10-15%, he is in deep trouble and will need immediate intervention. Usually there is fluid around the heart. That can be drained off. If a valve is damaged in the heart, it has to be repaired. If he has an irregular heartbeat, he may need a pacemaker. Many possibilities
