Mum is 98 with poor eyesight and stiff joints. She likes to handle her toilet herself but to change her depends she has to take off her pants and it is very hard for her to get them on again. She can get the depends on and up, but the pants are a problem. The second leg is the problem. She can call for help but is resistent. Any ideas?

Can you not just let her wear long nightgowns, or even what they used to call many years ago "house dresses," so she doesn't have to fight with the pants? My grandmother wore those house dresses for as long as I can remember. I'm sure you can still order them online.

She could wear a dress or skirt. If she wants to wear pants and needs a high level of protection she may do better with the tab style briefs, but since she is toileting she may be able to get by with one of the extra long higher absorbency pads.

My relative cannot manage to change either. A continence nurse suggested adding a smaller 'booster' pad inside the pull-ups stole she wore. If she could manage to change that when needed, would be no need to change pullups & clothing pants. Not enough for bowel mishaps but was sufficient for medium bladder leakage when going out. Enabled her to use public facilities independently.

Morning & night she did require assistance to fully dress though. The booster was just a temp daytime solution. Was also very bulky.

May not be suitable - just another idea for you.

Would she wear dresses or does she prefer pants? I bought my grandmother a bunch of comfy, warm, fleecy, zip-front or button-front gowns. She had fluffy knee socks to go on her legs. I bought the gowns at a local Macy's in the PJs/intimates area and it wasn't expensive, at the time, to get a bunch of them on sale -- around $10-15 per piece. That made them disposable, too, if there was a mess. You could buy a couple to try and go from there.

I'm not sure if the depends are the issue or the pants. If you can't get a pant leg off, seems it would be hard to get a brief off, too. Maybe switching to tab closures on the side for the depends is best move, and then she can pull the pants down and get the brief off without having to take pants off all the way. Good luck!
