Hi dad has 3 adult children. We already own burial plots. He is doing an irrevocable funeral prepay for himself. He wants to do one for each of us 3 grown kids too. I told him I don’t think Medicaid would recognize those as valid exemptions if he has to apply for Medicaid within the next 5 years. He also thinks he can pay any of our medical bills too. Has anyone ever heard of this?

They are not valid exemptions.

Why does he feel the need to buy plots for all of you when you have your own? I would politely decline his offer.

Pay your medical bills? That’s odd and none of it will be allowable. Why does he want to do these things?

Take dad and Elder Law attorney. Medicaid regs vary widely from state to state.

No, I don't think Medicaid would like that.

Prepaying for childrens funerals and paying for childrens medical bills will probably be seen as gifting by Medicaid and cause penalties.

He is doing this trust work with a qualified attorney.
He should discuss this with that attorney.
I agree with you, that I doubt Medicaid would be OK with his burying others, so to speak.
Wishing you the best. Hope you will update us with the answer Dad comes up with.
