Dementias vary widely and vary according to stages as well. There are many different forms of dementia.
Demenia is often confused with other things. Personality disorders, acute illness (such as stroke, urinary tract infection, anxiety, etc.).

I wouldn't call it "side effects" that refers to medication and side effects can be helped. I think you mean symptoms. Some, like anxiety, can be used. Some can help slow down the process but Dementia is not curable.

There are many types. Alzheimers is in the category but really completely different. There is vascular, Lewy Body ( which effects emotions, some from a head injury.

I found early signs were not being able to reason or process whatvwas being said. Short term memory too. As time goes on they may seem to make up stories or get "stuck" on something. Paranoia is common as is being angry at someone for no reason. As the desease progresses, they will forget where the bathroom is and may need help cleaning up. They usually take everything out on the caregiver. Eventually they are incontinent and in their own little world. TV, dreams and reality all become the same thing.
