I have a friend who is under guardianship. Her guardian takes money from her account to pay a portion of the rent for their apartment. Her guardian is refusing to let her pocket her holiday bonus, and will only allow her to have $75. What is appropriate in this situation? Why can’t she keep her $250 bonus? She would like to be able to buy gifts.

The accounting for guardianship is VERY strict. If there is any question a lawyer should be enlisted by other family members to check on the guardian's reports to the State.

Might be time for your friend to engage an attorney. There is an accounting that must be adhered to. The money is to be used for your friend no one else.

Why waste money on an attorney? The guardian already reports everything to the courts. It’s the courts that control the money.

The courts actually have full control and the guardian has to report how every penny is spent and get approval from the courts to spend anything out of the ordinary.
