Our Mother is 88 and lives alone. My sister and I share the duties of shopping, laundry and cooking for her, although she does cook for herself. Mom does take care of her own hygiene. She is having problems walking and refuses to go to the doctor.

Our primary doc said many hospitals have lists of doctors who still make house calls. I was able to find a doctor whose sole practice was for the homebound. My dad had recently had surgery and was receiving nursing services at home and I asked them for a referral. Best decision we ever made. My son did his clinicals at a major teaching hospital in our are. They had a community outreach clinic and those doctors also made house calls. Good luck.

Look up Visiting Physicians Association and see if they are in your area.

Actually, it depends on where you live. My parents live in Michigan and there is a service where the docs come to you. It's specifically designed for housebound patients. Check with your local Council on Aging, or do a Google search. I found the service in our area because I saw their van in the drive-through at McDonalds one day.

P.S. And good for you and your sister for pitching in together and caring for your mom!

I don't think there are any Dr.'s that make house calls. They can't even get to the hospital to see their own patients anymore.

How about a nurse? Call mom's Dr. and see if you can get a visiting nurse to come to the house. You can't just order one like a pizza but maybe you can arrange it so that a home health nurse comes in and checks on your mom once a week or so. If your mom's problem is balance the nurse might be able to get a PT to come to the house on a regular basis to help your mom with her walking. But start by calling the Dr.'s office and go from there.
