Years ago Mom was very near death and I started preplanning at a funeral home. I put in several thousand dollars toward the funeral. Nobody in that town even remembers Mom anymore so we won't be having a funeral home gathering, just a graveside service. But I worry about losing the $ on deposit with the funeral home...we could use it to help support her nursing home costs. What are my (her) rights to a refund?

Find Care & Housing
Many places will transfer the funds to the new funeral home. Look at the paperwork andvtalk to the new local place. Happens a lot.

The deposit must have had some kind of written contract attached to it: do you still have a copy? If not, you could contact the funeral home and ask them to confirm the original contract details. But this was a voluntary agreement entered into by a competent adult, with delivery on an event that will ultimately take place: I'm not sure you will have an automatic entitlement to end it and expect to get all of your money back. Hope I'm wrong, and/or that this funeral home is happy to refund at least the bulk of your deposit as a goodwill gesture.

Read all the documents you signed at the time you made the deposit.
