My aunt recently received a second degree burn between her legs from hot chocolate which she could not hold. I'm not sure why it was given to her in the first place. My family wasn't notified until the following day and then it was a web of lies regarding what happened. The care giver tried to say it was from her depends but the nurse attending to her said it was a burn. The caregiver did not file an incident report and everybody is acting ignorant as to what happened. This includes the general manger over the facility. What steps should we take next?

Contact the state agency that has licensing control over the facility and file a complaint. You can also contact the local State Ombudsman and file a complaint. Or you can call the police and file a charge of Abuse of the Elderly.

In Florida the facility should have contacted you immediately. I would also want to know if her physician was notified and were treatment orders received.
