Three years ago we attempted to get VA benefits for my mother based on my dad's service in the Army. He died in 1992. She is legally blind but lived by herself until 2014, when a series of UTI's made it impossible and I moved in with her. I retired in 2013. I have a very understanding husband and he stayed at our house. In 2014 we tried to get VA benefits and somebody came out and filed out paperwork. We were denied for a simple omission of some data. We didn't know what was wrong and with other things going on, gave up. I attended a seminar about getting VA benefits through aide and attendant and tried again and this time she was granted an award of $495 a month starting this year. When the Field Examiner came out to determine if I could be her fiduciary, he commented that he didn't see why I wasn't getting the $1100 which is the maximum. He said I was a medical expense to be with her 24/7. However, he said it was not his place to tell me how to get it!!!! I called the woman who set up the successful award, and she does not return my calls. I called the general VA # and they sent out some forms which I don't understand on how to state I should get more.
