my mom is 82, very sick, depressed and so im i am very depressed. I know that soon as doctors told us she will be gone soon, i am in fear. Would like to know if there is support group i can attend in person in NYC area. thank you.
Susan, first, NEVER include your e-mail address on a public forum. There are spammers and advertisers and who knows what else that come along periodically. You put yourself at risk by including that kind of personal information, especially your real name.
This is the site at which you can contact the Admins and ask them to remove your e-mail address:
As to your question, to locate support groups of various types, contact hospitals first. In Michigan, the larger hospitals are more likely to have a range of support groups.
You can also contact a senior center near you, or assisted or independent living facilities in the area.
You can also call United Way helpline, 211, and ask them about support groups.
Have you considered seeing a therapist or a doctor regarding your depression?
I'm new here... and I entered my email address when I signed in. Does it show? Also... to the OP, I totally understand you being depressed as a result of your mom's depression (my dad is the same way, as am I). I just went to my doctor today for my yearly physical, and she asked me, off the cuff, how was I doing, and I just started crying uncontrollably. She put me on an antidepressant (which I haven't started yet), and advised me to find an online caregiver's support group (why I am here now). The answers so far sound very much like what she told me. Surely in NYC there has to be resources for you. Best wishes and godspeed.
Welcome, Melissa. You wrote in your profile that you're going to school. What's your major and what are your career plans?
Your e-mail address does show in your post. It's required so the Admins can contact you if necessary, including to send you updates on posts if that's your preference. But the only visible on these posting pages is your screen name.
When I was at my lowest, my son googled care giver support groups in my area. He found one at a local senior health center (sponsored by a local hospital) and they meet twice a month. Really great source to have that face of someone else having issues with care giving.
This website is great too, but I enjoy the face to face as well.
Also I have started counseling and my counselor reminds me to stop and make a list of all of the positive and good things I do...I sometimes forget to do that...and when I do I realize how much I do and no wonder I am stressed...
Whoops! Major error in my post. Your e-mail address does NOT show in your posts, or in your profile. Sorry. Must be the computer gremlins pulling words out after I post.
If you're in NYC then you can call 311 and ask for resources and services for caregivers. A good operator will know what keywords to look up. This is a service provided free of charge to all NYC residents. Good luck!
Antonio, please contact the Admins at this URL and ask them to remove your e-mail address. As I wrote earlier, it's not safe to publicly share your e-mail address on a public forum.
Ok, Antonio, your e-mail doesn't show. It is safe to come back and post now. Or, just come on here and read other posts or articles. You can start a new question. Keep a low profile until you know how to navigate, that's okay too. Once you have been on here, you are a part of the caregiving community, and will be supported. Hope that today, you are feeling stronger, and have found help. {{{{HUGS TO YOU! }}}}

Given that you're written about depression, shysters could easily contact you and try to capitalize on your unhappiness.
