My 89 year old mother lives in an apartment in Florida. My sister is her primary caregiver but can no longer bear the responsibility. I am looking for something in or near Westchester County, NY where I live?
Hi Carmen, A place to start is the home page of agingcare.com. Type the Zip code where you want housing into the search and see what comes up. You can check out these choices. Assisted living may be your best option. You can also call around in the area and set up tours. It always takes footwork, but if you can get a start on the computer, you may want to try it. Then go to the phone, and get more information. Affordable is different for everyone. If your mother has very little income she may qualify for subsidized housing, but again, you'd have to check with the county or nearby city of your choice, so a Zip code check may help. You can call Social Services in Westchester County to see if they have a list of subsidized housing as well. The problem here is that there is generally a waiting list. Good luck in your search. This is always stressful, Carol
First off, you need to consider your Mother's health and her daily needs. A Home Health aide may work, depending on her needs and your schedule. What I did for my Mom for Assisted Living was to check ratings on the internet and visited 6 different places that were close to the kids. Also took Mom to 2 of them and she liked one as soon as she saw it. Her facility is self pay. For my Dad with Dementia, I went to my state's ratings for each facilty, to a Federal government site, don't remember which one, may have been Medicare or Medicaid to make sure they were certified and check their inspection report. Then went to visit and tour the one my Sister and I liked the best. We then got on their waiting list which was full at the time and my Mom wasn't ready to let him go yet. Finally, she knew that, even with a Home Health aid, he needed to be in Alzheimers unit.
Westchester County is going to be expensive! Apples to Apples (for instance Sunrise Senior Living Emeritus, Vi, Five Star, etc.). much cheaper in Florida. I'm not sure about NY, but in Florida we have 6-12 bed "adult family homes" that are licensed as ALF's and offer much more personal care and attention than the hotel-like corporate establishments. If mom were in such a venue, would your sister still be so burned out? If mom (or the family) has the bread, by all means move her north (brrrrrr!). But remaining in FL might work if the sis is relieved of the burden of day-to-day.
