I have looked at a lot of assisted living places, and all of them charge in excess of my mother in law's limited monthly income. I have no way of making up the difference. Although she is eligible for the VA benefit, this approval time takes up to a year. It is getting to a crisis point where she needs more care than can be provided at home but I haven't found anywhere that falls within her income per month. I need to know if there is anything or any avenue out there that will allow my mother in law to get assisted living care that does not exceed her monthly income. Do I press the social worker for a solution? I am starting to worry quite a bit about it.

In the Washington DC area, there is an excellent resource that gives a list of senior living facilities in the Maryland, Virginia and DC area. It covers a whole variety of things related to 55+ to elder care, to finding government resources.

This is where Medicaid gets confusing. They consider AL a community based service, so look at HCBS (home and community based services) on your state's Medicaid site. Your next problem is finding a facility that accepts HCBS for payment. Expect to be on a waiting list.
