My father recently moved in with me he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis over 10 years ago he is getting very reliant on me for his financial help making his meals and so forth I'm just curious if I can get paid for being his caretaker, if so how do I go about this is there applications I need to fill out or how do I go about getting set up for that.
Most adult children do not get paid unless they have a written contract with their parent to be paid by them. You can use the search site box in the upper right hand corner of this page and search being paid for taking care of parents, but you will not find much.
It does not sound from your description that you dad has the money to pay you. Would he qualify for medicaid?
You would need to draw up an employment contact saying how many hours a week you would work.... the hourly wage.... what days you would have off [if any].... if he would pay for vacation days or sick days [who would cover for you if you weren't available]. And he would need to pay your payroll taxes, or you would need to pay quarterly estimated income taxes. There are payroll companies that can process a paycheck if you find the payroll taxes a bit overwhelming. Elder Law attorneys can help you draw up a contract.
You are great for trying to keep him at home.
