Simple question. Once in Medicaid can you get off it? Can you return to independent living and get your Social Security and pension back?

Find Care & Housing
No property, no recovery.

I'm interested to hear that this happens "all the time." There must be a medical need to qualify for Medicaid. Does this medical need just go away? Or did the financial need go away, because of an inheritance or lottery win or something like that?

My question would be, if you can get by on just SS and your pension now, how did you qualify for Medicaid earlier? But, yes, there is not requirement to remain on Medicaid.

My mom qualified for Medicaid after we paid penalties on money she put into 529 college funds for her grandchildren and Medicaid still went ahead and attached the accounts. So tens of thousands in penalties paid AND no college savings plans for the grandchildren (even though they were set up 10 years ago). Medicaid is a bunch of crooks! Don't do ANYTHING without consulting at least two attorneys!

Hopefully the loss of grandmother’s money that the family was counting on to pay for her grandchildren’s college tuition will be by replaced by the savings of their parents.
If grandmother has money why shouldn’t it be spent on her care? Medicaid is taxpayer funded & a last resort.

Unfortunately, Shane, it was money that was saved by doing without, walking to work and keeping the heat at 62 all winter in an attempt to send a first generation to college. Not so easy to break out of the working poor.

Certainly you can, it happens all the time. But all the monetary aid you received will be recovered from your estate. Usually it becomes a lien against the home.
