She is also legally blind, is still living in her house but my two sisters and I are with her 24/7. one of the sisters lives in Chicago so she flies here every other weekend to help care for her. My mother has dementia, has congestive heart failure, and falls a lot. I am thinking of putting her in a nursing home but dont know if we can afford it.

Hi donnapage- I'm sure this is a very tough time for you. I agree with the last reply that speaking with her doctor is a great place to start. I would also recommend identifying and reaching out to an elder services agency in whatever state you are in- they should be able to assign a caseworker to your mom and will help you and your family determine the exact level of care needed and what services might be available to help you take care of her- a nursing home may be one option but there are other options to consider if it is at all feasible that she remain at home with help. Lastly, I would highly recommend retaining an experienced elder care attorney to help you make sure everything is in order and again, that your mom is getting every service she deserves. Although the attorney will charge a fee, I found in my own experience that his expertise saved me thousands of dollars on the back end and it was worth every penny. I wish you and your family the best in making these important decisions.
