My mom is at her last stage of dementia & is starting to be aggressive. I have a question about hospice because i am not too familiar w/ dementia or heard too much until my mom. i research on the web, but i don't know what to believe. My mom is really young(only 60) and has a rare , fast progressing ,form of dementia. Is hospice a form of treatment used for dementia patients? Can anyone recommend it for their loved ones? Or it has to come from the doctors? She no longer can speak, except gibberish, can barely walk with assistance & is starting to have difficulties swallowing.

Galecki, check with your mother's doctor about bringing hospice in. Most will work with dementia. Your doctor should be able to call them in to do an in-home evaluation to see if your mother qualifies. You can also call them yourselves. If you live in a larger city, there may be several hospice companies. Your mother's doctor should know which will be best for your mother.

I would contact hospice. I think you'll find them so helpful. Big hugs coming your way. It is a hard walk you are walking right now.

My dad got Alz in his early 60s. We went to his doctor who helped us set up hospice. that was a Friday, hospice was to come on Monday. But my sweet dad passed away on Sat. So yes Alz patients can get hospice. I wish you and your mother well.

I do believe that hospice could really help you out. I do hospice work and many of my clients have dementia. Your doctor should be able to help you find good hospice care.
