Share a few details and we will match you to trusted home care in your area:
Hi mrw1959. Home Care Organizations provide non-medical home care aides (HCAs) to assist with the activities of daily living like hygiene, meal prep, cooking, escort to appointments, errands, etc... depending on the level of care the client needs.
Here in California, Home Care Organizations like us, are licensed and governed by the Department of Social Services (CDSS). Our professional and well trained HCAs are our employees and are registered under the Home Care Aide Registry. We conduct a free assessment to determine the level of care and schedule needed and for us to assign the best HCA/s for your loved one.
You also have an option to hire an independent caregiver directly. Here, you may have an employee - employer relationship and would need to provide workers' compensation insurance and have tax responsibilities. Make sure the caregiver provides you with criminal background check clearances, professional and good character references.
You may feel a little overwhelmed right now but it is just actually finding the right person or HCO so you and your loved one can just focus on spending quality time together once a regular schedule is in place. Aging Care has some Home Care Organizations included in their list.
You could hire someone in your community privately and pay them using a payroll service that will take out all the proper taxes and provide the care giver with a check or direct deposit. I keep a time sheet on a clip board where the ladies record their hours during the week; on Sunday or Monday I log on to the payroll site (could call or email) and enter their total hours for the Sun-Sat week just completed and transfer the required funds. It's easy for me and the ladies get paid on Friday.
I have had good luck finding homemakers or early retirees in their 50s, 60s, or 70s with grown children who don't really need the money but would enjoy a little extra spending money. I hire in pairs and split the hours so that if one lady has a conflict on a given day or goes on vacation, the other lady is usually available to pick up those hours. Just make sure you are up front with your needs. I need this help primarily so I can attend events scheduled late afternoon/early evening or on Saturday. One lady I approached declined evening opportunities because her husband wouldn't like that but is available for afternoons or on Saturday.
