Find Care & Housing
I had someone tell me that elderly people should only be getting 6 to 7 hours a night for good health. I find this ridiculous. If they are tired, shouldn't they sleep? As a side note, my Dad does not nap during the day.

It matters how active they are during the day.. Does he sleep during the day?

He's not very active (bad hip) and he typically does not nap at all during the day. He goes to bed about 8:00 pm and sleeps through the night until 6:00am. Is that really so bad?

Well, good that you questioned that well-intentioned advice. An 83-year-old man should sleep as long as he wants to sleep. And sometimes, as in my mom's case, even LONGER than she'd like to sleep. Ha!

Going to bed at 8 AM and sleeping until 6? Sounds like a gift - to him AND to you. If I did anything, I'd try to keep him up later so he'd sleep 'til 7 or 8 AM.
